After finishing Gundam 0083 Rebellion, I really wanted to read other works by Masato Natsumoto, but it may be the case that I went in with too high expectations. This manga focuses on one of the minor characters from the original Gundam anime, a character who got a "day in the limelight" and then thirty years got a small manga spin-off for himself. The art is fine, but I can't help but feel that the slice of the One Year War depicted here is too small. The story here is that Chief Petty Officer Cuaran is a Zeon soldier sent to Earth as a part ofa scouting squadron. The manga focuses on fleshing out his small slice of the combat on the Eastern Front, scouting and fighting for Zeon's cause. It also includes a dry run of the method he would later use to attempt to destroy the Gundam. Other than that, there's not much to add. The characters aren't too developed, and most of the fun in this series is the battles.

The art is good, as you would expect. Characters emote quite convincingly, while battles are depicted with much of the same lavish detail seen in 0083 Rebellion. One scene I recall in particular is a morale boosting concert where a girl sits and plays the cello, producing an elegy composed to remember all those who suffered to build the space colonies and live in them. It was well-drawn and surprisingly touching.

It's a short manga, perfect for UC fans who want another hit from the One Year War, but I can't say it's a must-read. It's perfectly competent, but not as engrossing as 0083 Rebellion.
