Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
The pacing in this film is greatly improved from the original show. But that is about the only praise I have. It still suffers from the same issues this part of the anime had. Introducing too many new factions and characters, all of which, get barely any backstory whatsoever. 'Captain Mask' and his crew still are underdeveloped, and the same goes for the Towasanga faction. Honestly, at first, I thought they were part of the Venus Globe with how poorly they were explained in both the anime and the films. That's fine, maybe they will fix some of the dumb plot points from the show with thisone? Right?? No. We once again have to experience the plot point of our protagonist and his crush that he is 'in love' with turning out to be his biological sister. In fact, they make it EVEN WORSE in this film. In Episode 16 of the anime, after he finds out she is his sister, it cuts to them alone having a conversation and trying to be normal about it. For this movie? that scene is replaced with an entire new sequence. In this scene, we see him crying in the forest and having a mental breakdown, shouting to himself that he was shown DNA evidence, and crying that his crush is his biological sister. He then proceeds to Naruto run in anger in the forest on his own and falls over. Noredo his childhood friend who has been in love with him for years finds him crying in the forest and says these lines "You're disgusted that she's your sister" and "I thought this meant I'd won" and then walks away. She calls him out for being upset about his crush being his sister and then makes a comment about how she has won vs Aida and can keep Bellri all for herself. And then walks away. You cannot make this shit up.
In the last 5 minutes of the film our protagonist randomly goes "Sis, you're pretty." She headbutts him and says "Indeed I am." Reminder that he killed her boyfriend at the start of this series....
Do you know what else didn't get changed and is still just as stupid as in the show? The part where 2 factions are fighting in space, literally shooting and trying to kill each other - and then a space cleanup crew shows up to clean debris, so both factions immediately stop fighting, pull out nets and settle their differences by who can collect the most garbage in space. Yup, we still get this part from the show and it is just as goofy here as well.
Definitely the worst of the compilation movies so far. The pacing and order of things are slightly improved, but all the worst points are still here and one of them is made somehow even worse in this version than before. Disappointing.
Also, pretty much every mecha in Reconguista looks awful outside of the G-self (base form) and the Grimoire. All the others are uninteresting or stupid. One of the 'Mack Knife' units even shoots missiles from its crotch area. And the way half of the mobile suits basically have a screen with a smiling face or some symbols as the head design is lame to me. Mech designs are more subjective, so I won't subtract any points from this for that - oh wait, I can't because it's already a 1/10 regardless.
