Review of Wonder Egg Priority: My Priority
Do yourself a favour and pretend that this special does not exist. If you have come wandering into the review section for this special and wondered why WEP has an aggregate score of around 8, whilst this is sat around a 5 at the time of me writing this review, heed the warnings and turn around, pretend that WEP season 2 is currently in development hell and that somewhere, somehow, these characters and this setting is being done the justice it deserves, either on a storyboard, a writer's room, or hell, even in someone's head. First and foremost, the first 26 minutes are a recapof the whole show, leaving a final 20 minutes of proper narrative to try and tie it all together. I don't even think that if you put this in the hands of an incredibly capable, experienced writer that they could have pulled off a satisfying ending. I watched the whole series and this special with a friend and we were convinced that a season two announcement was coming, perhaps so we could keep that little shred of hope going for as long as possible, before we were shown the "The End." card and felt it all shatter. After all, there was no way it was left there, right? We were more confused than when we started.
At the end of it all, I was left with a disappointing taste in my mouth. Like I was expecting a nice cake and someone slopped a spoonful of gruel down in front of me instead. And like the idiot I am, I swallowed it down, thinking I might get that cake later.
I never did and I never will. And that's the worst part of it all really. It could've been so much more. I think that WEP's demise is a symptom of a greater problem in the anime industry, of that dreaded crunch, the first example jumping to mind being that the anime that brought us such fluid and great visuals also gave us Ai running at quite a decent pelt, yet somehow barely managing to move a few inches.
