Review of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Stunningly overrated. Sousou no Frieren drags its slow, melancholic pacing like a badge of honor, mistaking stillness for depth. The emotional moments feel hollow, stretched over long silences that lead nowhere. It’s a show that desperately wants to be profound—but lacks the narrative weight to actually be profound. The artwork is undeniably clean, but almost too pristine, like a museum exhibit you're not allowed to touch. There’s little soul in the animation beyond a few well-composed frames. The music, though nice, is overused to prop up scenes that lack genuine tension or emotion. Frieren herself, despite being the centerpiece, feels less like a character and more likea symbol. Her interactions rarely evolve beyond soft monologues and tired reflections. The supporting cast exists mostly to highlight her detachment rather than grow independently.
The story’s structure—monster-of-the-week meets vague life lessons—wears thin quickly. It preaches the value of time and memory while giving you little to remember. When everything moves at a crawl, even the rare good moments get buried under the weight of tedium.
If you like watching paint dry on a very pretty wall, maybe this is for you. For everyone else, there are far better slow-burns out there.
