Future Card Buddyfight Hundred · review
Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
So after Future Card Buddyfight fell off so drastically at the end of the first season, I was hoping for some measure of comeback to make it worth the twenty one hours of your life you are investing into watching it. The season opens as kind of a goofy reset after the events of Season One and it kind of just plateaus there with ridiculous story additions like a Hero World monster who is a full on villain. To be fair to its credit, it does try to deepen the mythology of the show. But ultimately, this season suffers from the same problem as SeasonOne in that the writing of the characters is utterly terrible, particularly the two main male leads; two selfish children who try to protect everyone by taking everything on themselves only for those decisions to negatively impact everyone else. For example, Gao loses his first Buddyfight and his reaction is to become afraid of his cards, to abandon his friends and Buddy and to quit Buddyfight. It’s not so much a problem with the genre but a real problem with the fact that the writing for child friendly shonen anime insults the intelligence of the core audience who watches it. A real cause of worry is that there is still three seasons to go and that it might see a quality decline… if that’s possible given it’s already low quality.
