Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
Pretty good. The premise is interesting and is immediately engaging enough so that I completed it within 3 days. It had some epic fights and a few really funny and heart-wrenching moments. That said, it feels like the creator *primarily* wrote it in order to explore philosophical ideas. Because of this, the themes often felt incredibly on-the-nose and expositional. It also meant the characters lacked depth, the plot any complexity and it was honestly pretty cliché and left MUCH to be desired. There was basically no exploration into the origin of the parasites, or other potentially interesting plot-points and the ending was non-sensical and left a tonneof plot-holes.
Most of my favourite stories prioritise great characters (plot second) and the themes emerge organically from there. In contrast, Parasite felt a wee bit forced.
Still a solid show though and worth a watch!
