Review of Horimiya
Truly wonderful. All the trashy love triangle romcoms with obnoxious characters, take note, this is how you set up a romance story. If you want to shoehorn in a love triangle for forced drama, do it with the side characters that we don't really care about, don't make your protagonist a whiny bitch who can't decide if he should have an emotion. I've been watching this side-by-side with another show with the same setting and general premise of high school romcom, and I can't tell you how refreshing it was to switch back to this after sitting through another episode of that hot mess. The pointof this review isn't going to be to bash on that particular anime, I'm just using it as a general point of reference that this show is far and away above better than most of the other series I've seen of it's kind.
First let's talk about the characters. Miyamura might seem bland, and okay yeah he is a bit, but my favorite thing about him is how he doesn't have protagonist syndrome. You know the archetype, "Oops I saw you naked!" "Ew, gross boobies!" "I can't say I like you, that'd be embarrassing!" He meets most situations where another, more obnoxious character might show embarrassment with complete and utter indifference. Hori is A-grade waifu material. I think watching the interactions between these two was the highlight of the show. The side characters were all pretty fun, too, even with the stupid love triangle. Have I mentioned how lazy and played out those are?
Let's see, I liked the part where she said Miyamura couldn't hang out with the boys anymore because she thought they might be turning him gay. I liked the parts where she wanted him to yell at her, because he was normally so indifferent to everything she just wanted to see a different side of him. I liked when he shows up looking like he got into a fight but then it shows the other guy and he's way more beat up. I could go on, this show is full of great moments.
Overall a 9/10, great watch and just a fun show.
