Review of Kakushigoto
I struggled between 7 and 8 on this one, but the obvious passion the creators have for the series pushed it over the edge. Their care takes an otherwise slightly generic premise and plot and makes it interesting. The main part of each episode consists of actually funny antics revolving around keeping secrets from Hime, childhood misunderstandings, and jabs at the manga industry. The producers also set a lot of time aside for heartwarming interactions between Hime and her dad. Each episode is capped with a look into a darker future, which is the focus of the final episode. This anime is well balanced between comedy andtragedy. The art is also split between serviceable character models and surprisingly detailed backgrounds (one night sky nonchalantly has an accurate rendition of the Orion constellation, including a correctly colored Betelgeuse). The tone is a blend of sweet and comedic, with just a dash of darkness.
The serious side of the plot is a bit rushed, given that it is largely crammed into one episode. However, the characters really save the show. They are all distinct, and the love between Hime and her father seems real and justified. Everyone would enjoy this anime, although I think fans of child-raising anime and realistic comedy will love this. This is significantly better than most shows I've seen.
