Review of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
I've been very fond of this show from the start, so much so that, even as there were some production issues, delays and even some dips in the animation quality, I was here for this series. In its finest moments, this series could easily contend with even JJK S2 for animation quality and has some excellent emotional moments. I'm particularly fond of the two initial leads, Akira and Shizuka, who approach the end of the world very differently due to their very distinct backgrounds, but come together over the course of the series. Beatrix and Kenichirou are great in their own rights, the former forhis bromance with Akira and comedic drive, and the latter for just how much light she creates in the series with her love of Japanese culture and face-first mentality, always a joy to watch.
Part of what really separates this series from most others is that it's great both when it's being ridiculously goofy and serious. It balances its elements well, and it's certainly more than just a goofy watch.
Back when the 9th episode released, this was a real contender for AotS for me, holding up every bit as well as JJK S2. Even with Pluto out, I thought it remained in the running for it. So, how well did it stack up after its break?
Well... it's not anymore. The last three episodes weren't bad by any means, but I don't think this series needed antagonists (with one major exception in the middle who I thought was excellent) and I don't find any of these believable or enjoyable. Even the lead antagonist Kanta, who admittedly gets some great moments towards the end, feel kind of half-baked. When the characters are calling them out on their mentality and there's really no points in their favor. I can't get into the why of it without major spoilers, so I'll leave it at that. Still, none of these episodes skimp on the emotional moments, showcase the strength of our leads, and there's some great sakuga. That’s enough to keep it near the top of my seasonals, but not quite there.
The best thing I can say about it is that I was left smiling. It's a wonderful experience overall, even with its flaws.
