Review of Spy x Family Season 2
This is a comedy anime that you can actually watch with your old parents or your (teen!) kids. The second season delivers more of the same, without deviating much from the first. However, people have complaints. Let's do some meta-reviewing with some of the negative/mixed ones: - bad animation: The fights in this family comedy anime were better than 90% of all shonen anime ratedDid I mention that this is supposed to be a family-friendly comedy anime?
- background music:
- no plot: well, this one is actually a really good point. Even for a comedy anime, there is much less going on plot-wise than either part of the first season.
- too much focus on Yor, too little on Loid: the show's name does indeed have "Spy" as the first word in the title. It also has "Family" as the only other word. I don't think character development for what is considered a main character is bad for the series.
- repetitive: yes, the common gags can be repetitive, but I don't think it's boring, yet, because there was decent variation. 12 more episodes of the same will probably get boring though.
- family friendliness: yes, sadly this season cuts a big part of the target demographic, younger kids. The fight scenes at the end are probably not something you'd want to watch with a <12 year-old, although it's okay for teens and above. It is probably a bit far-fetched to call this "extreme violence and gore", but there is a valid point to be made. Before you could watch it with 5+ ages, but now it's more like 12+. It makes absolute sense as part of the story (assassins, spies, terrorists, secret police, cold war), but doesn't fit the otherwise innocent tone of every other episode (including this season's).
This gets an 8; down from a 9 for the previous season. It delivers in everything that I expected and more, but there are indeed issues (kids/violence/plot don't concern me enough... yet).
