To get it out of the way; Given is the best BL anime. In a genre that is riddled with discomforting age gaps, questionable consent and other issues, Given is a breath of fresh air that proves that just because the anime is gay, it doesn't mean its just a gay anime. The story, without spoiling is touching and very engaging. Our main cast are always a joy to watch, especially Haruki and Akihiko, the supporting bandmates of our main couple. They're a joy to watch. Given's main focus is on its characters and their relationships but another key point is the music. Given doesa good job of easing the viewer into musical/guitar concepts, taking time to properly explain the purpose of everything. I also appreciate the attention to detail, whether it be including the name of the guitar brand on the headstock or something as minute as recreating string packaging. The soundtrack is very good, delivering some J-Rock bangers. The OP; Kizuato being a great example. Its catchy as hell and definitely not something you want to skip.

If I had to critique Given for something; it'd be its animation. Its good, for the most part. Though the artstyle changes to a very clunky 3D whenever the band are playing their instruments. Its to be expected, I imagine the budget wasn't incredibly big for a yaoi show like this but it definitely hurts, especially since the band playing is such an integral part to the show.

Despite a few shortcomings, Given delivers on almost fronts. The show is short, clocking in at only 11 episodes, so there's no reason not to watch. If you're in the mood for a cute, emotional gay anime with some amazing music on top, you should be watching Given.
