Review of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

So, I came here knowing what to expect since I've been an avid fan of the manga since its release. And to be honest? This is one of rare moments where I can proudly say that it really outdid my high expectations for the show. Frieren's manga is already one of my top faves ever since, and it is there for a reason. I've always loved slice of life and comedy genre, so when I read Frieren, the chill, heartwarming wholesomeness with occasional hype really captured my interest. It became one of my reading pleasures not long before I started. And then came the anime announcement.I was really surprised but at the same time, worried. I was worried that my favourite manga might not translate well into the anime medium. I was thinking that the profoundness of the manga can't possibly be conveyed properly through anime. But oh boy, I was wrong, and I am very glad that I was.

Visuals:
I was genuinely pleased with how the visuals were flawlessly executed by the animation team. I must commend Madhouse for crafting this masterpiece. Initially, I had doubts about their approach. Their track record with the shows I've watched has been inconsistent, but I'm relieved they've succeeded with this one. They managed to capture the essence of the manga's art and enhance it, making it sharper and clearer. It felt like watching the manga in high definition. Upon seeing the trailer, I already had confidence that the art style would be faithfully represented. However, after watching episode 1, I was concerned that subsequent episodes might suffer in quality. Yet, as I continued watching, my worries gradually faded away as they consistently delivered high-quality content. Some scenes were particularly noteworthy, and I believe they utilized rotoscoping effectively. I'm a fan of rotoscopes when executed well, and those scenes were a prime example of it. Even mundane actions such as sitting down or putting on a jacket were exceptionally well-animated, adding an extra layer of depth to the experience. Among all the anime series I've watched, there was only one that I considered truly beautiful, and that was "Violet Evergarden." Now, I can confidently include "Frieren" alongside it. Overall, I have nothing but praise for the visuals of this anime.

Music:
The sound design in this anime was truly phenomenal. I was already excited knowing that Evan Call was composing the OST, especially considering his success with "Violet Evergarden" and "My Happy Marriage." I hoped he would bring the same magic to this series, and he certainly delivered. The OST used in some episodes gave the feeling of cliche yet uniquely captivating that made it stand out from other OST from anime of the same genre. Both the opening and ending themes were exceptional and perfectly suited for the anime, each possessing unique elements that complemented the story. Essentially, every aspect of sound and music integrated into the anime harmonized seamlessly with the overall theme.

Story/Direction:
As a manga reader, the story was already familiar to me, yet the anime managed to evoke the same sense of magic as if experiencing it for the first time, which I truly appreciated. It stirred emotions within me akin to those elicited by the manga. The plot twists still sent shivers down my spine, and my favorite scenes from the manga were portrayed with justice. Additionally, I appreciated how the anime expanded upon certain scenes, liberating the story from the constraints of the manga. While the manga felt vivid to me, the anime breathed even more life into it. The pacing of the story remained as beautifully executed as I remembered, retaining crucial elements for world-building while also enriching the narrative with seemingly trivial yet delightful interactions. Each episode not only imparts moral lessons but also serves as a poignant reflection on life itself. The anime adeptly underscores the beauty not only in the past or the future but also in the present moment, emphasizing the importance of cherishing each fleeting moment.
