Review of Darwin's Game

Darwins game takes an interesting approach in terms of genre, I would almost call it an Isekai-lite, considering, they're in their regular world, but, a mobile app opens up a dark sinister side of it, in the form of a "game" in which they're all playing. The only thing is, it's far from a game, as death equates to the person actually losing their life, leaving behind digital, square type divots in the ground where they died. Our MC Kaname, is thrust into this game world, more or less accidentally, when he stumbles upon the application, and starts it up, not knowing what that would meanfor himself, or the people around him. The first episode, an hour long one at that, set the pace for the entire series, and showed off the type of world that D-Game is, and rounds the episode off nicely, with an introduction to what is one of the best waifus of the season.

The show follows a lot of the normal shounen type troupes, and there generally speaking, wasn't a whole lot of surprise or twist with the direction that the story went. At the same time, they did a nice job of keeping the story interesting, without diverging from the path that makes these types of shows consistently solid. The combat is interesting, and the method in which their powers are granted, sigils assigned by the game itself, is also something different.

The cast of characters is likeable enough, but, outside of Shuka, they don't stand out a ton, which, in my opinion, they make up for through their personalities, and abilities, as well as what they bring to the table, in terms of impacting the main group. The voice acting was nicely done, no real qualms with anything feeling out of place, although, I must admit, that I can't really nit-pick foreign voice acting, considering, it all sounds nice to me.

I thought the art and animation was also a big plus. The character models are solid, if not very basic. I love the way the eyes of the characters are drawn, as it isn't a very typical anime-esq type of eye.

Personally, this gets a high 8 from me. ~8.8 or so.
