Review of Amnesia
Move over Bachelorette, because Amnesia has something a whole lot better and with a twist! Plot/Setting: I'm going to say straight up that I was severely confused 90% of the time. But there is a reason behind this, and don't start saying this show sucks because of it. It's quite interesting. Think of this as a third person limited POV or a first person POV story, we are only in one person's head: Heroine, and whatever is happening around her, we'll get the same reaction: confusion. I mean what else do you feel when you get amnesia? We don't understand everything is going on becausewe aren't in the other character's heads. So all of those jumps, plot holes, etc. is all because of being inside Heroine's head. It's jumbled, confused, and very fuzzy. Nothing more. Just think about that when you watch it.
The setting is a bit strange. The synopsis says fictional place, fiction time, etc. But is it really? There is a sense of realism, but also a dreamscape. It has this Alice in Wonderland feeling too it with the confusion. And leads me to several questions: Was this just a dream? Or a trick of the mind? An illusion? Or is there something deeper going on in Heroine's head. The creator's of this story did a great job putting some sort of mental illusion into the watchers head and making us think of these psychological possibilities.
Art:
Very colourful. If someone was high, this would be the colours they'd see. The eyes did do it for me. They were strange, unnatural, and just plain disturbing. However, the animation was, as usual, very clear, but seriously can someone please do something about these character's choice in clothing!
Sound:
The music was fantastic! A very catchy opening and some very good background music. However, the voice of the character's were horrible. I started watching in dubbed and switched over to subbed half-way though because I couldn't take it! And even then, it was still horrible. The voices barely had emotion to them and often were very boring and monotonous. There was no passion in the actors that played them.
Character:
The characters in this was very interesting, and like I said in the plot, very Alice in Wonderland. Heroine is like Alice, confused and disoriented. But she didn't have a lot of emotion to her. She didn't react to things other people would react to. She was very static. Orion is like the Cheshire Cat. He's there to guide Heroine's way by not telling her everything that will happen. The rest of the male characters ranged from Queen of Hearts to the Mad Hatter. They were all psychos.
The characters did seem to have hints of several mental illnesses. There was Amnesia (obviously), Schizophrenic psychosis, Multiple Personality Disorder, Obsession Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and a few more others. This not only created something totally brand new, but it showed what people could act like with these illnesses. Very interesting.
Enjoyment/Overall:
I'll be in the list of the people who gives this a relatively high rating because I'm thinking out of the box and away from what I saw obvious in this show. I wasn't all that into it though and found my confusion leading to boredom very quickly. There was no tension, no suspense, and I often found myself predicting what would happen and being right. Everything was too predicable. However, this is based off a VIDEO GAME, not a manga, so I have to give the creator's credit for doing something a lot of people don't do despite not creating a great plot. This show is hard to understand and the viewers really have to over think what is going on, what we are seeing, and why we are seeing it through this perspective. What does it all mean? I'm going to say this to everyone who watches it: Be prepared to get confused. But remember it's all for a reason.
I give this show a C or a 64% on the what-did-I-just-watch scale.
