One of the things I like to point out before judging anime that is based off of an otome game is that potential viewers/readers should realize exactly what I just wrote: the anime is based off of an otome game. That said, there are certain conventions that usually follow, which explain why certain parts of the story function the way that they do. For an otome anime, I would say that Amnesia wasn't terrible. I have watched much worse. I thought that the art and the music was quite good, so in that respect we can at least say that it isn't complete garbage. I liketo defend otome anime because I play otome games and I don't think there's anything wrong with creating an anime for people who can't/don't want to play the game(s). I see anime based off of otome games as a way for people to be introduced to the general plotline and characters (notice that I said general). So I'll go through what people complain about with this anime most often.

The protagonist/heroine has no personality: This is a convention of otome games. The protagonist (unfortunately) usually has weak personality so that the player (or viewer) can project themselves onto the character. It's difficult for players to relate to a heroine that has a very strong personality because the heroine might otherwise say/do things that is unrelatable to the player.

The plotline is confusing/doesn't make sense: Unfortunately Amnesia has a generally confusing plotline AND the anime is trying to give viewers a general idea of the game while cutting corners. I think you can understand where the short-comings arise. That said, I have not actually played the games (yet) and I understood the plot perfectly fine. In most otome games you won't understand what is going on in situations like Amnesia until the very end. I play a lot of otome games, so I understood this convention when I started to watch the anime and I accepted it. I understand that it irritates other people who don't like to see this in anime because obviously anime isn't the same thing as an otome game.

The other characters/guys are boring/weird: These characters also follow certain conventions. If you play a lot of otome games, you will notice a general pattern with the kind of characters/guys available for the heroine/player to date. I thought the guys in Amnesia were fairly standard. This doesn't necessarily mean they aren't "boring," but I thought a few of their personalities were to be expected.

Sexual harassment in the series: This is probably a controversial point for me to make, but it is difficult to apply Western feminism to anime because Japan does not conform to these ideas. I'm not saying that particular things in the series are NOT sexual harassment/problematic, but I think that many viewers forget that this anime was not created with Western ideas in mind. For example, many people complain about (SPOILERS) the part in the anime when Toma puts the heroine in a cage. He is basically holding her hostage. Have the reaction you want to this information - but in Japan, this is serving a certain demographic of people who like very problematic/forceful love interests - even delving into the yandere genre. I'm not ready to police the production of games/anime/entertainment on the basis of those fantasies being problematic, but that's just my opinion.

Concluding thoughts: I think that as an anime, Amnesia is fairly mediocre. Taking into account that it is made based off of an otome game, I don't think it's that bad. I think that there are some better ones, but it isn't the worst. It follows the same conventions that all the otome games I have played follow. I don't think it should be faulted for those things.
