The Chronicles of the Going Home Club is a slice of life comedy manga about 5 cute girls trying to do things that sometimes are cute. It ran for 3 years in an online magazine therefore it's neither shounen nor seinen, it's just comedy for all masses. The synopsis while it being a mere bait for people who like K-on, Sansha Sanyou and the like, offers a glimpse at what Kitakubu really is, as in it has JK from the Going Home Club spending their after school time doing nothing in a clubroom. The mangaka made a meta joke about the way japanese express themselves whenthey say they won't join any group (Kitakubu), so we actually got a club.

The entire manga has the type of humor seen from the title, also puns, figures of speech taken seriously, manzai, not as much surreal and bombastic comedy, at the end of the day it's 5 cute girls talking about the weirdest and useless things, doing in such a way that'll make the audience laugh.

The manga took me by surprise because it is not the comedy style I enjoy, it's too static and the constant tsukkomi and japanese puns flew over me but as with most works, Kitakubu has something for different tastes.
I really enjoyed the situational comedy when the girls have to fix something with their skills or something unexpected happens which blows the status quo of the boring talking scenes. All characters have the potential to cook something that'll change the entire flow of the chapter, even the main girl who's only talent is having an ahoge.

If you watched Seinfeld you'd think this was it's japanese cousin, I need to point out that this is a manga about nothing. No matter what the girls are talking about makes any sense, one chapter is just them playing a word chain game but because it's Kitakubu, one of the girls will put a huge stake for the game, we'll get fake drama and epic mind games, I have no idea how that game ended but Nacchan was cute.

Are the characters interesting one may wonder?
Main girl is a basic self insert main character who likes to tsukkomi and has a huge ahoge
Blonde hyperactive girl who always loses and does stupid stuff
Rich ojousama who's a lesbian
Best fighter in history who's calm and diligent
Kouhai who's the cutest girl

It certainly feels like all the girls are played by their tropes in a good way, mangaka manages to write stories based on those character tropes, adds a bit of personalized quirkiness on each girl and it blends well for a Kitakubu chapter. After a while, the reader will understand how will the girls will specifically react to a certain situation.
We will also get references used for comedic ways, sometimes entire chapters and sometimes one panel, everything from video games, manga/anime to unknown japanese personalities.

The art is limited, the girls are indeed drawn cute and moe, other than that the backgrounds are boring, most of the action happens in the clubroom, let's say the backgrounds aren't important. The reaction faces are gold though not on the same level as popular comedies (Saiki Kusuo, Hinamatsuri, Nichijou, Asobi Asobase). I say it's good art and will definitely get a reaction from the readers, even if one doesn't understand the joke, hey, at least Botan looked silly in this panel and made me laugh.

It's not popular for a reason, first being the specific comedy, most people won't find it funny this abstract and bland style of Kitakubu, second being the mediocre art style and characters that lack impact. Both this and Aho Girl got an anime yet everyone knows Yoshiko whereas no one knows Sakura.

Chapters are very short but a lot of unpredictable stuff can happen in those 10 pages.
Read this comedic masterpiece if you enjoy looking at cute girls doing nothing.
