I think after catching up with the manga awhile back and watching it in animation form you can start to see the limitations in the writing, specifically the usage of flashbacks. My memory isn't the best but most of Himmel's flashbacks didn't span more than a few panels and with few words in-between, but watching it play out every single time when a character feels nostalgic over little things start to feel very lazy. We get it, the series relies heavily on the party in the past and their motivation for their current journey is heavily influenced by those characters. It feels like the author isafraid that we'll forget about them so it's almost mandatory for characters to have an epiphany during slice of life moments. I just wish she would have more confidence in the writing of characters who are on their journey right now, without the over reliance on nostalgia to fuel their progression.
This is just a caveat to the writing in Frieren, it's a roller-coaster. You'll have your down time until a major arc and you'll focus primarily on what's happening with the current party in most cases. The flashbacks are starting to become comedic relief for me because of how funny it is to forcefully insert it at any given moment.
