Yes, I gave it a 10, but I’m also saying you might not like it. This is an awesome show, truly. However, it is very much aimed at a specific audience that can appreciate its themes. Let's start with what this show is about and the kind of message it’s trying to convey. Then we’ll discuss how it achieves this and how well it utilizes the major elements of the show to do so. So, what is this show about? Sousou no Frieren is about memories and the ability to appreciate those around you. What’s truly masterful about it is the choice of setting and the overall vibesof the show. Even on your first viewing, it feels like you’re reminiscing about your own past adventures.

First things first, let’s talk art direction.

The art is amazing, but it’s never distracting. Like everything in this show, immersion is key. The visuals are stunningly beautiful, though somewhat generic, yet they never pull you out of the experience to think about the animators or designers.

The same goes for the music. There aren’t any ‘absolute bangers’ to dance to. The openings aren’t trying to energize you or prepare you for action—they’re simply soothing.

All of this fits perfectly with the world-building the show sets out to do, which is intentionally generic. This only adds to the calming atmosphere and chill vibes. We rarely feel anxious about the outcomes of confrontations because we’re already familiar with this world, and we’re free to just sit back and enjoy.

So, how does it start?

The beginning clearly sets the tone for what you can expect. It’s as good as the rest of the season and doesn’t mislead you with more action or elements that won’t be present later. It perfectly establishes the tone and themes that will be explored throughout the series.

This is a tale set in a familiar world that we’ve already conquered. This is as true for our protagonist as it is for us in many ways.

What about the characters?

The characters are where the show tries to innovate. Each main character is a blend of traits common to their respective class, mixed with something a bit off, creating a wonderfully crafted deconstruction of what it means to belong to that class. There are also consistent parallels between the current party and the heroes' party, allowing these aspects to be thoroughly explored.

They still feel relatable and close to home because they are very charming. There’s a character with a slightly more explosive nature, but he doesn’t detract from the chill vibe at all; in fact, he’s managed very well.

What about the story itself?

The story lives or dies by its themes. There’s a plot element, but it’s essentially a MacGuffin—“We need to get there, and that’s it.” Each character has both an objective and room for growth, but what really stands out is how we can appreciate every moment spent with them.

Most of the runtime is episodic, though there are some larger arcs. The show has a strong RPG feel, capturing perfectly what it’s like to play your favorite game after completing it—wandering around, doing side-quests, and reminiscing about the golden days.

So, what did I think of it as a whole?

Some might see Sousou no Frieren as generic, since it leans heavily on familiarity to deliver its themes and concepts. I think it’s a masterful use of tropes to deliver a powerful message. It’s particularly tailored for long-time fantasy readers and RPG players who can sympathize with Frieren herself and appreciate the familiar feel.

If you’re looking for a familiar and chill adventure with a lot of charm and good memories, this might even become your favorite.
