Harem Royale: When the Game Ends · review
Reading the synopsis, this seemed like it would be a unique, psychological horror-esque take on the ordinary harem slop I see so much of nowadays. Instead of a bunch of girls falling into the lap of some pathetic MC for no reason, they're forced against their will to play the part, and are openly incentivized to employ manipulative and outright violent ways of getting ahead of each other behind the scenes. It looks like an extremely fucked-up manga where the FMCs slowly pick each other off, which is great because that's exactly what would've appealed to anyone who read the synopsis and decided to giveit a try.
Unfortunately, that's not what you get. Instead, the entirety of the manga is just the FMCs banding together, trying to come up with ways to outsmart the system so they don't have to engage with it. It promises a horrific story of violence and betrayal, only to turn on its heel within the first two chapters so it can instead deliver a slightly more edgy than usual take on friendship and trust.
This brings me to the next major issue with this manga. Outsmarting the system takes some clever writing to keep things suspenseful and engaging, which the author clearly wasn't capable of. Instead, what you're left with is 19 chapters filled to the brim with extremely lengthy explanations of the characters' ideas for how to outsmart the harem game's rules, followed by more dialogue where the other characters share their exact feelings about how good those ideas are. There's no room for suspense and, frankly, no room to breathe. It's exhausting having every panel completely filled with dialogue slowly working toward a conclusion that was usually obvious from the start. It reads a lot more like a poorly written essay than a manga. Friendship and trust is a boring enough topic to explore even with good writing; with bad writing, it's just a lost cause.
Credit where credit is due, the ending was actually pretty creative and I think it was handled well. This does little to improve my overall opinion of this manga, however, as it's the only part of the story that I would say was handled well, and you have to read through an ocean of meandering dialogue to get there. I think this manga was cool in concept, but it chose to completely throw away most of what that concept promised, and the dialogue ruined whatever remaining entertainment value could otherwise have been salvaged from it. Don't waste your time.
