Story: 10 The main idea behind this story is the evil nature of humankind. We are all scared of monsters that we see in stories, but what we should be really afraid of is ourselves. Devilman is dark and depressing, because that is what it's supposed to be. People are biased and they let fear and hate blind them. Hope disapears. The devilmen aren't the monsters, humankind is. And Devilman:Crybaby portrays this theme in a way that conveys. The only downside was the excess of sex scenes. Yes they make the story more mature and maybe even realistic, but at a certain point it's just overdone. Art8:
Yes, art budget was low af. But yknow what, it really does my eyes good. I'm done with the current mainstream animation style full of glitters and pastels. They all be like:
"x was shocked, she widened her eyes and and looks up. Her eyes reflect the sunlight which makes them glisten, and her hair bounces as she raises her head" scene duration: 1 min
or: "It is raining. The raindrops fall into the puddles on the street, making ripples in the surface that reflected the victorian buildings." scene duration: 2 min.
Those animation styles make me throw up. AT LEAST DEVILMAN ART IS DIFFERENT AND THE ANIMATION ISN'T OVERDONE.
Also, the ugly, disturbing pictures reflect the theme. A better/clearer art style wouldn't have suited this anime.

Sound 8:
Music pretty imatating, suits the theme.

Character 9:
All characters have depth.
[!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!]
The main characters portray different ideas. For example Miki. She is hope. She's always positive and tries to make others believe in each other. She supports the devilmen who aren't evil. Her death portrays the lost of hope, after which there is no going back; hatred has destroyed the world.
Or Ryou: he doesn't understand what love is. All he did was actually to protect Akira, but he doesn't understand that he's actually destroying him. Akira wanted to teach him love, but Ryou didn't get it. When he finally got it, it was too late. The importance of love and understanding is portrayed
Etc etc
[/spoiler]
Even the less important characters have meaning. They show the thoughts and disatisfaction of the population, aimed at society.

Just go watch this you uncultured swine.
