Review of Space Dandy
The combination of Watanabe, Bones and Ian Sinclair (for all the dub lubbers) was surely an instant draw for some but many would soon be scratching their heads. I certainly wondered what I was watching however I didn't have to scratch far under Space Dandy's goofy, seemingly vacuous bonnet to find what is in fact a creation full of heart and beauty. Plus I like my sci fi to feel like perhaps I shouldn't have taken that second acid tab. The art and set pieces are truly glorious. For every quip about boobies and booty there's another with surprising deftness and subtlety. I know itstill won't be for everyone. Not all of its ideas are particularly original, it may seem a disjointed anthology that will withhold any sort of final payoff. While it does endeavour to tie the threads, by the end I came to realise that looking ahead just detracts from the moment. That is why I find myself rewatching, again and again, despite my long list of unseen anime, and finding a deeper fondness each time. Don't take it too seriously, let each episode take you on a ride. And, as always... stay Dandy, baby.
