Review of Sword Art Online
Sword art online, or SAO For short, has been the punching bag of anime for close to 10 years. For pretty obvious reasons, shallow overpowered mc, some reason a chick magnet and has a girl fall in love with him literally the same episode they meet. And of course, hes completely oblivious to this, he doesnt even acknowledge these girls let alone give them closure, he barely acknowledges the feelings at hand when his sister confesses her love for him (ill get onto that later). Point is, kirito is close to be 1d, but now you might ask. Intrusted, if this show is so fuckingdogshit why give it a 10? Well, the key to enjoying liking and even seeing sao as GOOD of all things is well... dont, take it for what it is. a good plot with shitty execution shitty characters shitty fan service shitty dialogue. Practically everything about this show sucks except the sound and art/animation (its A-1 ofc). If you can take this show for what it is (garbage), it will lead you to a more enjoyable and hilarious experience, relax. Dont take this type of shit too seriously, half of these reviews while true take this show too seriously. While you can bitch about pacing of romance and the characters and the overpowered main character, and while those complaints are valid. Who cares? the show is fun, its funny, it has boobs, sex, weird incest teasing and rape teasing. While that last one isnt inherently good, its hilarious to watch. And while these characters are usually very shallow (except kirito's sister imo) it is certainly a good watch if you know what to expect. My main complaint about this show that can truly ruin the enjoyment of it no matter how much of an enjoyment fag you are (as myself) is the pacing, especially of the romance. kirito gets
MARRIED! in episode 12 (i added the spaces incase someone isnt trying to get spoiled), just a single episode after their first kiss. While the kiss itself wasnt paced improperly, it was just very quick which was sort of the point. It was a sudden, spur of the moment-esque kiss. My problem doesnt stem from the kiss but with how they rush the relationship to a marriage and a practical adoption the next episode? we dont get to see any of the actual relationship develop they just kind of. Let it spill all at once i guess? it ruins the actual tense part of their relationship. But i will mention when Asuna attempts to develop a more intimate? (sexual) relationship with kirito by taking, more like unequiping her clothes as she misinterpreted what he meant by "sleep in the same bed". While hilarious, felt almost cardboard like with his reaction. He literally just blushes and tells her thats not what he meant and pretends like nothing happened. Anyway, lets move on to my main problems with the romance pacing. 3 words, liz and sugu. Liz's relationship with kirito starts with kirito being redirected to her by asuna for assistance with his weapon (the elucidator i think?), he then proceeds to break her best sword by smashing it against his and they have to go hunt for better material on a mountain, they encounter a beast end up in a dragons nest they dont know is a nest (its basically like that big hole in spongebob that squidward patrick and spongebob are trapped in), they hold hands she blushes they fall asleep escape, typical shit right? NO! near the end of the episode she for some reason decides to confess her "love" to kirito? im not sure if this was suppose to be to boost kiritos ego or if they actually though this would be effective character development, either way. Not only do neither of these excuse the fact that she confessed to kirito, THAT SHE JUST MET! not only that, the dude barely fucking reacts. Well in fairness he didnt hear her confess but he still has little to no reaction to anything she does throughout the episode, she also cries at the end because she can tell hes interested in asuna? not to mention she only gets shown 2 more times after that episode, in a quick b-roll type thing. and in the very last episode showing the sao survivors, she gets more screentime in the second season but that is no excuse to introduce a useless character just to boost the mc's ego. But to pivot around my previous point, while this is annoying, WHO CARES!!! ITS FUN!! ITS FUNNY!!!! anyway, sugu. Fuck, well, kirito is sugu's "Onii-chan" or her big brother. And has loved him for years ever since he got into online gaming (no particular reason its just concidence that it was around the time he got into online gaming), and after he comes back from the simulation. Hes suddenly much more nice and coming-around to sugu. As when he found out that they werent actually siblings and just cousins he started distancing himself from her. So she thinks she can use this is a catalyst to forget about her real-life problems with their relationship and to forget about her love for him, but when she tries virtual reality herself. She meets kirito who is in the game she is playing to save asuna who has been trapped by her weird/creepy/rapey psuedo-abudctor, i say psuedo since he didnt abduct her but is taking advantage of her while she is still in the hospital (weird kissing hair smelling and trying to feel her up in game), anyway. They meet when kirito spawns in and conveniently spawns next to her in a fight, she comes in as she is about to be killed. Slaughters them all, and they become friends as she helps kirito make it to the world tree, ill skip the character development and get to my point. She develops feelings for kirito both of them oblivious to the fact sugu is his little sister and kirito her big brother (how doesnt she know that her brother is kirito let alone the name kirito since its so famous because of how he was the one who saved everyone in sao) and she develops feelings for him just as she was about to give up on real kirito, once she finds out that kirito is, well, KIRITO. She falls into a short lived depression about how she had fallen in love with in-game kirito and finally thought she had moved on from actual kirito, planning on replacing him with in-game kirito. Until she finds out they are the same person, realizing she had never truly moved on. That she had betrayed her own heart by making the promise she would never reveal her feelings for kirito. Then just revealing them to kirito that she didnt think was kirito, just as she was about to move on to. Tragic, anyway. He asks her to meet him in-game in a specific spot. He wanted to apologize and the only way he can think of how to apologize was to duel her and give her a free blow/hit to make her feel better. This just evolves into them going to the tree and fighting practically infinite enemies until they make it to the top where the freeing of asuna happens. The point of this section was just to keep my promise from the top part but also, in some ways i would like to critique it. This love, while probably more developed than the asuna arc (lmfao) in alot of ways. Felt almost, rushed? I get it, they had like <10 episodes to develop this relationship since he already woke up and we met her near the end of the show (16 or 17/25) and truthfully this isnt even my main problem, they did the best they could with the pacing time they had and it worked out pretty well. But why an incest arc of all things? if im being truthful it was almost a guilty pleasure to watch but it still felt weird and un-necessary to the plot, kirito, and sugu. I felt like this was just to grab the reader/watchers attention to make them think "LOOK AT THIS CHARACTER SHE WANTS TO FUCK HER OWN BROTHER!!!! LOOK AT ME I JUST GOT PROPERLY INTRODUCED!!!!" but thats irrelevant now.
Conclusion: SAO, in terms of enjoyment, hilarious value, and in some areas character. Is an absolute fucking masterpiece, funny AND enjoyable to watch, critics and try-hard anitubers can write million page essays on how this characters balls are one centimeter off balance and anyone who watches this show is low iq and retarded but it doesnt change how funny and enjoyable this show is. first review, seems good, im out.
