The first thing about this anime that I love is that it revolves around gamers, so I already thought that it would be an awesome anime. So, the first thing that you notice about Sword Art Online is that it throws the main characters right in the deep end, not waiting around to reveal the dramatic plot points. Even though this might mean there wouldn't be any big shock moments, there are still some pretty surprising little points in the episodes. Second, if you look at a lot of the first arc, Kirito has a fair amount of development. At the start of the anime, he hasa lone wolf mentality, he is strong enough to take on the world by himself. As it goes on, he changes, always in a way that makes him a "better person" (which, if you think about it, doesn't suit the stereotypical gamer, but oh well).

You might read reviews of Sword Art Online that say that the second arc is terrible, I absolutely disagree with that. While the major plot point of the first arc is taken away, there are some really good things about the second arc as well. Also, the second arc has a much more coherent storyline, which would have probably been less criticized had it been a second season. DO NOT SKIP THE SECOND ARC.

Overall, I think that SAO is a great anime, but I think that some of the anime appeals a lot more to gamers than other people.

EDIT: Also, this anime is kind of a harem. Almost every named female character except one wants Kirito.
