Review of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
This is a pretty solid sequel and takes leaps further than the show in terms of quality. For more insight, I decided to give the movie a chance since I had recently watched Koe no Katachi and wanted to see more from the studio. I heard a lot of praise directed to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and... I hated it. The characters, sans Kyon, weren't likable at all, the plot felt stale and non-existent and by lord, the infamous Endless Eight arc is as many others would put it: absolutely horrible. Had I watched this on air, I never would have finished it, nortouched this movie. I did, however, have tons of time to pour into the franchise and binged them both in two days.
While the show was mediocre and I felt bored and exasperated watching Kyon get ragdolled by the female lead for the 47 millionth time, the movie was much different.
The characters were finally written in a way that I actually cared about them. As much as I couldn't stand Haruhi, I felt Kyon's loss and the feeling that something was missing. I actually wanted Haruhi to come back and piss me off again. It truly was incredible that I felt that way, since I'm a terribly stubborn person, and normally when I hate a character I don't give a shit whether they come back or not. Maybe it was the quietness throughout the film, or maybe it was the fact the events took place in winter, the season when the dead silence sounds its loudest. Either way, even if you don't like the prequel, this movie will hit very different. You might like it!
