UFO Senshi Dai Apolon · review
Allow me to write a few words since there is no review for this series so far. In brief, I would say that it a standard 70's anime giant robot series that any fan of the genre would enjoy. Dai Apolon is a giant robot, made from three different robots, gettting the 3-part idea from the previously released classic Getter Robo. The main character Takeshi is a 16-year-old orphan that is revealed to be a prince from planet Apolo raised at an orphanage. Along with four other orphan chilrden they make the UFO shounen team against the Dazaan forces that are attacking Earth. The main story startsa bit crudely at the first 3-4 episodes but it gets better as it progresses so don't be discouraged at first. The characters are typical of a five member team of that time and the dosage of drama and comedy is well balanced in my opinion.
The only thing that makes me wonder is the design of Dai Apolon as a huge american football player and that the characters are dressed like that too. Well, do they play american football in planet Apolo? They could have added that element in the story as an explanation to make it believable. As far as I know american football was not a trend in Japan (even if they had teams then they were amateur teams) and of course it makes the series lose points for that ridiculous (but original I have to say) choice in my eyes.
To sum up, apart from what I mentioned right above and the rough start, it's a very decent watch.
