Fairy Tail certainly does not earn a masterpiece ranking from me because it just didn't fully outdo my top 10 favorites. Despite that, I actually really enjoyed this show. I almost dropped it around episode 50 or so because all the arcs had basically the same pattern of new event, new bad guy/group discovered, power ups, victory. Given, I was still really enjoying it even though I was debating about dropping it, which was just due to the length. I found myself getting deeply involved in the show around episode 60 or whenever Edolas was introduced. I won't claim that the storyis something really original or that the characters are necessarily original because they're not, or at least not fully. There is always a slight difference between stuff. Fairy Tail has a few things going for it:short arcs, mostly short entertaining battles, cool magic, multiple characters so you can likely find a few to like even if you hate most of them, and at least right now, it has the shortest overall running time of the shounens with 100+ episodes.

As for the characters. Most characters do not really have significant growth. I personally don't care a lot about character growth because I hate it when shows take too much time to show character development (This is a huge reason for why I don't like Log Horizon). I personally really like Mirajane, Erza, Millianna, Gray, Gajeel, Natsu, etc. I know that there personalities were pretty much set from the point they were introduced, but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather set personalities than characters that change too often for stupid reasons.

As always, it's up to decide if you're going to watch it. If you don't like shounens, avoid this.
