Review of High School of the Dead
Warning possible Spoilers You know I do like a good zombie anime from time to time, but when you bring in a bunch of good looking female characters into the mix then you have a distracting recipe. The story begins in Japan where a sudden outbreak of the undead arises, stuck in High School Takashi Komuro along with other surviving students must fend off the undead horde while looking for a safe haven. Now when it comes to the Zombie genre you don't really need a well thought out or complex story, all you need is a bunch of characters fighting the undead while trying to find asafe place to survive the apocalypse which is pretty much what this does, I will admit watching these students fight against Zombies and travelling the city trying to find a safe place to hunker down was actually pretty thrilling and entertaining to watch, outside of the action moments it was still fairly entertaining because there were some moments for the characters to relax, but once they got too cosy there were a few disputes amongst the group on whether they should make certain choices that could either benefit their survival or shorten it. There was also a bunch of times where in classic horror fashion the group does split up so you wonder whether they'll survive or not, however they use surprising methods to avoid or take down the zombies like when Takashi and Saeko use an amphibious vehicle to escape a horde of zombies.
Now the characters were very mixed in my opinion some were pretty badass, some were annoying and some were actually pretty useless.
Takashi the main male MC can be a badass at times when he is taking on zombies with his baseball bat or when wielding a shotgun, but there are moments outside of combat where he can be a bit of a buzzkill since he has feelings for Rei whenever they talk to each other they always seem to argue mainly because of Takashi's indecisiveness.
Rei is the main female MC and her character is pretty straight forward most of the time she is a bit of a Tsundere, but when she is in combat she can also be a badass especially when she has martial art skill's to back her up, other than that there is not much else to talk about her character.
Kouta is the other male character and is probably my favourite character mainly because he would probably be what I would be like in a zombie apocalypse and because of his nerdy personality he's someone you want to stick up for though he can get a little crazy in the midst of battle, but he does care for the well-being of the other students plus he's a gun nut and who doesn't like a good gun nut.
Saeko is the Badass female character of the group and wields a wooden samurai sword and at some point she gets a proper sword, now the problem is that her badass quality is the only good part of her everything else about her is bland and gives me very little reason to like her character a lot.
Saya is the proper Tsundere of the group and despite her smart knowledge which has helped the group escape multiple situations she is annoying as Fu*k and this annoyance really puts me off her character it made me want her to die in this show which sadly doesn't happen.
Shizuka is pretty much the clumsy one of the group and the only thing she can offer to the group is her medical expertise and that is pretty much it with her character, she has big breasts that's something right.
Finally you have Alice a 7 year old girl who loses her father and is rescued by the characters of the show she is pretty much the adorable part of the group and keeps the group in good spirits with her childishness.
Now the artstyle was ok and really showed the gruesomeness when the group was fighting the Zombies and other people since Zombies aren't the only thing out there, I thought the intro to the show was actually pretty good too with it's Rock music which fitted surprisingly well.
The fanservice as this show is also memorable for was mixed in my opinion yes I know the girls have good bodies, but you don't need to jiggle their breasts everytime they move sometimes it was a little distracting and there were some moments where it was pretty stupid like that matrix bullet scene where it shows how ridiculous breast psychics can be.
I thought the action was pretty solid for a zombie anime and there was a lot of times where it got hectic like when Saya's parents home got breached by a zombie horde, when Takashi was saving Alice and all he had to use was thin wall to escape them or when Rei was held hostage by some crazy dude and Takashi had to be really careful with defusing the situation, so yeah the action certainly didn't disappoint me.
Overall I thought this was pretty good for zombie standards and if you're someone who likes good zombie action or enjoys seeing breasts jiggle then you've come to the right place.
