Kujibiki Unbalance · review
This is an interesting little OVA. Naturally, Kujibiki Unbalance is the anime from Genshiken, so it's technically an anime within an anime. While there are only three episodes, they correspond with episodes 1, 21, and 25 of a 26 episode series that only exists in the Genshiken universe. As such, you can really only understand so much about the series from this OVA alone. The basic premise is that a boy named Enomoto Chihiro is a student at a high school where the students are divided into teams and take part in a tournament to determine who will become the next student council president. As itso happens, the current student council president is a childhood friend of Chihiro's, whom she has feelings for. Chihiro and his teammates Akiyama Tokino, Tachibana Izumi and Asagiri Komaki go through a variety of humorous competitions pitting them against other students. I found the humor to be amusing and I liked the quirks of the various characters, but unfortunately with only three episodes it just doesn't get expanded upon in any meaningful way. You basically have to infer everything about the characters and plot.
The first two episodes are enjoyable, the but the third and final episode portrays a conflict for which there is no build up or explanation, leaving the viewer confused. It's literally watching the penultimate episode of a series after having only seen the beginning. It would have been nice to see a full 26-episode adaptation because there is a lot of promise and interesting themes here, but I suppose for budgetary reason it just wasn't feasible. I'd say the first two episodes are good enough; the third can be skipped pretty easily.
Overall, this is an okay OVA that fans of Genshiken would probably enjoy as supplementary viewing. I do like the theme song by UNDER17; very catchy. On its own it has a few merits like an interesting premise and some funny moments, but there's just not enough meat to it to be invested in the plot. I suppose this can be forgiven since this isn't really meant to be a stand alone show and is more of a parody than anything. Still, if you like Genshiken or just like watching really short anime, Kujibiki Unbalance is worth checking out. If you haven't seen Genshiken then you probably won't enjoy this at all. Again, it would have been nice to see this adapted as a full series, but it is what it is.
