This movie is conflicting. Being a huge fan of the original show and movie, this is something that I was not expecting (but then again, this is Eva). Before watching the rebuilds I had heard many things about them. Most people said that they were not really that important, and watching them wasn't really necessary unless you were a big fan. I listened to those critics for awhile, mostly because I was busy watching other anime. I finally decided...why not watch them during this quarantine. The first rebuild was basically identical to the beginning parts of the show, with higher quality animation. The second rebuild, was different, had a lot of action, which was starting to concern me, but I ignored it and followed along. This movie however, felt almost nothing like Eva at all. The original show and movie are known for being "chaotic" at the end, but simultaneously what Eva is known for. Shinji, Asuka, and other characters were given lots of screen time exposing their mental states, and what they were going through internally. The rebuilds show almost none of this psychological depth, and the little that there is, gets drowned out by the action. Hopefully the last rebuild will make up for this.
