Review of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, was completely unique and greatly ahead of it's time. The theme of man vs. nature and evironmental damage relates, more than ever, to our mordern day society. Lots of films have highlighted this topic but none in the innovative way Nausicaa has. The background art was done very nicely and it had great attention to detail, though I must say the way the people were drawn lacked and appeared like blocks of colour. It doesn't compare to the standard of art we see nowadays, but being made in the 80's I feel the lack of quality should be overlooked andinstead celebrated as a great achievement of it's time.

The same goes for sound, I can't deny that in parts it felt dated with the use of synths but regardless, I strongly believe that this film had a breathtaking soundtrack. The song created for the opening credits (and also later in the film) was beautiful, I can not stress how beautiful. It really sets the mood for the story but more importantly it captures the feel of Studio Ghibli.

It may seem strange but in all honesty, this film reminds me of Avatar, with the theme of protecting nature and the sea of decay looking like Pandora. Avatar had beautiful CGI and I can't help but think that if Nausicaa had been made in 2013 it would look somewhat similar. If that were case, then there is no doubt in my mind Nausicaa would have been one of the best anime's ever created and perhaps even more popular than 'Spirited Away' and such others.
