Watched as battle skipper the movie, dubbed, US Manga Corps. VHS: It cut toy commercials in between episodes for the battle skipper toy line. I know it was also released in individual volumes, but I don't have those. I fail to see the point of an OVA that advertises children's toys to teenagers. I guess with a $100 price tag I wouldn't expect many kids to have the money for the product, so maybe it was meant to be targeted at teens. Honestly I'm not sure, I don't know much about what teenagers would have been into back in mid 90s Japan. There isn't much in here that justifies the 13+ rating aside from the henchman to the villain being a masochist, and attempted rape with a bra shot. When I think about it, I would have loved that as a kid! Regardless though it could have been cut out to market to younger audiences.

As for the show itself. The art isn't bad for the time, and the animation is average. The music when it's there is ok, and even the training montage has a catchy song to it. The characters are a different story though.

The characters lack any depth, and don't act normal for someone their age. For example they don't even act accordingly to finding giant robots under the club room. Reika, the Club President is unrealistically laid back, even when Rie (the loud mouthed VP) is scolding the girls for basically hijacking robots to come help them with absolutely no legitimate reason to believe help was needed. I understand that the characters are supposed to be foils, but there's a point when it's unbelievable even for a easy going archetype.

The story is a classic corporate war story, where one company or group has tech another wants desperately. It's by the numbers and nothing really stands out about it other than instead of the usual suspects it's all teenage girls.

The first episode is mostly just setup, but in the second the battle skippers get to fighting, transforming, and actually doing cool shit. It manages to be somewhat exciting, but by the time the third episode came around though, I was pretty much checked out.

Overall not worth watching.

The battle skipper toy ads are easily the best part of this show.

Also Battle Skipper, is a terrible name for a mech.
