The Dragon King's Imperial Wrath: Falling in Love with the Bookish Princess of the Rat Clan · review
This is such a sweet little romance, but it moves a bit too fast for my liking. I wish for just one or two more volumes to really flesh out how everyone in the situation feels about it and the actions they all take. I mean there's four princesses left by the end of the first round and we never even see the dog princess I don't think, much less have a conversation with her or see how she feels about things. There's also a lot of very heavy loredumps, about the world, the clans, the politics, individual things like fated partners, and so on.And while it's absolutely nessecary for us to fully understand the plot, I do feel that they could have inferred a few things instead and left out the lengthy explanation. The cliffhanger at the end of volume 2 is also solved a little too fast to make it feel tense, and all around I think this story would have been vastly improved by the addition of a couple of extra volumes as I said.
However the various princesses are all unique, and have interesting personality quirks and differing goals and the like. Our protagonist is earnest, interested, and doesn't immediately just swoon into the kings arms like you'd expect, but works to try to get to know him. You definitely get the sense she wants to fall for him, for his own sake, rather than what she can get out of it for her people.
However, it really needed some extra time. It's a sweet romance don't get me wrong, and the artstyle and aesthetic is gorgeous, but the lore dumps take up time they could have devoted to the main leads falling in love, the volume 2 cliffhanger is resolved just too fast, and it really needed more time to develop the leads.
