Review of Tokyo Revengers
I don't normally write reviews but for this one i will go out of my way and share my feelings on a series that i feel at it's core is actually really good, fun and in many parts sad story that has some real bad elements that keeps it down. I will keep the review spoiler free as good as i can, only sharing my opnions and not refer to anything directly. Let's start with the story. At it's core the story is really solid, yes it is something we have seen before, best example would be Erased, but Tokyo Revengers does bring something new to thetable that makes it fresh. I would kind of say this series is told in 2 different story formats: "Slice of Life" arcs and big "point of no return" arcs. And i will say that the slice of life parts that we also can call in betweeners are really enjoyable, here we get alot of the story and the build up theese parts give are really really good. The "points of no return" on the other hand... well they are not really bad because of the story but simply because the characters, with the MC being the main culprit.
The art is really one of the parts that brings this series down real bad for me, it's not because the art is bad, but like many people have stated before me, the author for some reason wants like 90% of the characters to look like pre teens even when they are in their mid til late 20s. And the last 10% you may ask? They look like 30 year olds no matter if they are pre teens or in ther 20s. It's not even because the character designs in themselves are bad, but the fact that we so no aging or very little if any really breaks the immersion for me.
The characters, ohhh the other big problem i have with this series. And as i stated earlier the MC is the main culprit here. He gets put into so many life or death situations but we never see any real growth of him. The way he responds to a situation for the first time he will react in the same way the 30th time even if the 30th time is way less worse than all the other 29th times. But wait he can be badass sometimes you may be saying to yourself? Yeah sure, but it really just feels like he can stand up for himself only when the author needs him to do so to move the plot along.
I will say that overall it's a pretty enjoyable anime, even though i probably ended up hate watching it about halfway trough(mainly because of the fucking MC). But hey if you like Pretty Boys does Bad Boys things in really nonsensical ways you will probably enjoy this alot more than i did.
