Review of Blue Period

Thought-provoking inner dialogues and an interesting story about defining oneself (as an artist) are completely overshadowed by poor direction, clonky animation, and a sub-plot (Ryuji’s relationship with their family), which, while interesting, never really fits within the overarching story. Side characters are all one-dimensional, except for Ryuji, who, again, is poorly integrated into the plot. If you don’t mind any of these, you’ll probably enjoy the series. But ultimately everything happening outside of the protagonist’s head is just poorly written. This would’ve probably been a 6 or 7 at least if the protagonist’s voice actor was as good as Kyon’s in the Haruhi series.
