Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
I remember loving this before but one thing that stands out to me is how quickly they killed off the mother of the mc. it always felt jarring to me because I barely felt any of the intended emotional impact. even worse the storyline pretty much ended after like two episodes. and I feel basically the same way about every major death in this anime. the mc are just so bland and pretty much all the characters barely have any personality whatsoever. he did gets better but it was too little and too late. I was curious about the pacing so I decided to checkthe manga in between episodes and the manga actually took some time to progress the story. there's a lot more tension to it and the horror element is way more obvious. not to mention the mc in the manga actually retained some of his personalities after the transformation making him way more likable.
the anime decided to change things up a little bit by cutting scenes, changing characters traits and adding modern elements to it. which is fine, I have nothing against adaptation being different but the problem with parasyte is that they still end up with the same conclusion. so the character's decision doesn't really make sense sometimes. there's a lot of missing context that the anime just doesn't bother with. Kana is the biggest victim of this. she was delusional in both versions but the anime made her so stupid that it's hard to empathize with her decision.
ok let's go to the positive, the fight scenes are very cool. surprisingly it doesn't have a lot of fight scenes but when it does it slaps. the anime did a really good job with it that it almost negates all the negativity that I have towards this adaptation.
overall it was decent. I think the killer at the end drags the ending a little bit but I do like it when Migi saved Satomi. I feel like at a certain point the whole human and monster talk kinda gets repetitive after awhile and I pretty much tuned it out. it's borderline preachy but it feels sincere enough that it never really jumps over the line.
