Review of ReLIFE
The causal effect of our actions are very complex and in totality, very hard to decipher. However, what if those actions affected only you? What if there was no one to remember what you did? On the one hand: you could break all rules, steal,be promiscuous, etc. If no one is going to remember me,all this will be inconsequential after a while. It's the easier way out. However, this simulation can also be a road to get to know yourself better. To understand new people, gain new experiences and be a stimulated and totally different person when the simulation ends.ReLife deals with the latter possibility. Kaizaki Arata is a directionless, jobless person who seems to have no friends.Heis drunk and returning back home alone when a stranger offers him a 'ReLife': For 1 year, all his expenses will be paid for.In exchange,he will be a part of a simulation where his appearance will be that of a teenager in high school, but he will have all memories of his present life. The stranger will be his support for this duration.Post this 1 year,he will be the same old self but with new memories and hopefully, new mindset.
I had very low expectations from this show. So,I was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was.The humor flowed naturally and the characters were well chalked out.Almost every episode revealed a new facet of a character or about the relationship between characters. We also learn about Kaizaki's backstory.During all this while,it stays an entertaining show.Inspite of his reservations, the central character cannot hold back his actionable nature. He influences the lives of students around him.Inspite of knowing that all his actions will eventually have no effect and no memory in peoples' minds,Kaizaki continues to be a positive influence. Thus, performing one of the most selfless acts an individual can do: Doing good not only without reward, but also without any relationship or any good publicity to gain. However, the last few episodes seem to take a tonal shift. The writers decide to play against their strengths and it dampens the flow of the anime. Not that the episodes are bad,but they just...seem off. Also, the twist towards the end does little to add to the show. It's predictable and a tad unnecessary imho.
Still I liked the central idea of the show and the message it conveys.Definitely a one-time watch.
