Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
I'm actually a big fan of the SAO series but wow was this movie bad... I never thought SAO would sink to such a low... this was just bad all around... there were so many better ways to use the new tech that even if they really "had to" make this an "everything is at stake" movie instead of a simple daily life movie, there's just no justifying how horribly written the script to this movie was... Honestly the only good thing about how this anime was handled was that the side characters were given more character development than usual and that the combat animation/art/music was good, but the script was leagues bellow the norm...
The plot holes rather than residing in how things get resolved, reside more so in how the MC's even got the chance to do anything about it, unlike the first time the villain wasn't being arbitrary, unlike the second time the villain wasn't caught by surprise through a backdoor in the system left by the original creator, unlike the third time the person wasn't just a lucky psycho that could've failed at any moment, this time it was only via a stoppable and reversible(there's no reason for it to have been reversible, aside from the fact that the creators would've screwed themselves over if main characters lost their memories permanently) method because it was necessary for the movie... plus just the message being delivered so heavy highhandedly, ugh... definitely the worst SAO animation thus far...
This is without even mentioning how bad the story gets in terms of plot holes when the time comes for him to finally face Eiji and onward... there are simply too many simple common sense solutions the villains could've used to win and render the protagonists' side unable to do anything aside from avoiding the new tech... not that Kirito should've even been able to beat Eiji(huge real world boost in ability practically out of nowhere by kirito) or been able to get info out of him in the first place(what's up with the silent/secretive natured Eiji suddenly turning into a blabber mouth...)
