Review of Blue Period
What kind of audience does Blue Period appeal to : I am not an art person. I couldn't understand art thus people's love for it. Yet after watching Blue Period, although it may be seemed delusional to say the least, I finally am able to at least apprecaite art. This is what Blue Period is about, a teenager discovering himself and hoping there're others who'd truely understand his burning passion for art. Therefore, Blue Period is a "deep" anime suitable for people who'd gain enjoyment from contemplating what the story is trying to deliver. Even if you're not an art person like me, perhaps after watchingthis anime, you'd also get a new understanding about "art".
Why I give the score 9/10 :
ยท Story Telling
Not to be confused with "story", the story "telling" is what I find impressive about Blue Period. Art is abstract. Even so for an anime that deeply discusses this topic. To make one understand art, is no harder than trying to make one understand math. A well thought-out and sophisticatedly crafted object that is meant to express something specific ; A delicately interrelated logic combinations that produces a result only meaningful to the logic itself . All Im trying to say is --- it is even more inconceivably hard to "tell a good" story about art. I went into the anime expecting the worse to only prove myself wrong. Blue Period is not interesting because it is an anime about art, it is interesting because it is an anime about "someone that loves art". Instead of directly make the characters talk about art, the anime takes you through the process and mindset of creating art itself with the protagonist. Just like how you would teach someone to understand math. Hence you can truely see how art is amazing, not through itself, but the how the people feel when they devote themselve to it.
It's nothing but blatant and obvious that anime is a form of art, but Blue Period is an anime that has truely made me have a deep understanding of what that means. Immature, but genuine. So although there are places where it's rough around the edges, such as the animation quality etc. , solely from the fact that it was a very meaningful and enjoyable watching experience (some may think it's too high, but how many anime can truely make you feel this way let's be honest), it gets a 9/10.
