Review of A Whisker Away
Another beautiful addition to a film world of cats, that can easily be suggested to people, whether they may be anime enthusiasts or simply pet lovers. The movie having no jarring elements makes it a very nice and simple watch. While it submits to a good number of cliches, it does not mean the movie is incompetent. In fact, it's within the standard of solid average, this far in the age of anime. The setting could definitely bring forth more material, but the movie is good to stand alone. It did not have to be this groundbreaking movie of its genre. It is a simple delight. I'm glad tosee Netflix opening up to be a big platform for the medium, and I do hope more people get to appreciate the simplicity and pure heart of this movie.
Plus, it has cats. You don't have to care about every other word here. If you're a cat lover, you will love this movie.
Art Style 7/10:
The design fits the atmosphere of the whole anime. The 3D elements are also notable and competent. While the movie does not have some heavily detailed faces, it has enough to sell character expressions... and the remarkable world that everything is set in. Of course, there is nothing outstanding with a simple highschooler's setting. However, the rest of it, the cat dimension, is quite a refreshing take.
Characters 6/10:
But before that, the movie has a set of average high school participants, which naturally gives a different highlight in its supporting set... of cats. While the romance is a tiresome young adult concept at this point, it manages to be one of the crossing points to a better and more complicated progression. There are also incorporated family issues and self-discovery that, while not exactly unique either, helps set up for the drama and conflict of the movie. These base frameworks of characters prove to be effective complements to a very interesting story and give a free-form approach to the nuances of a person's life.
Story 9/10:
The story simply tells of a troubled girl who finds comfort in being a cat. The
backstory for the involved characters makes for a compelling drive to shape
the story and also the setting of the aforementioned cat dimension which, in all rights, holds a great appeal both as a plot point and a fantasy image. Plus, the key plot elements are handled with care and affection, which makes for a nice emotional response/ pulloff.
Sound Design 7/10:
All of these aspects are supported by a neat OST, a respectable choice for a light-hearted anime. It's a sweet addition to the overall atmosphere of the movie. No tear-jerkers for me, but it definitely delivers a nice feeling when it matters.
