Ronja the Robber's Daughter · review
I had low expectations for this (it's a Goro Miyazaki, not Hayao Miyazaki, work and uses 3DCG, two things that'll make a lot of Ghibli fans raise an eyebrow) but they were surpassed. Yes, the use of CG models is kinda of obvious but you can get use to them over time as the expressive character acting does help (they go particularly over the top with Mattis' reactions to Ronja and/or the Borkasons). Obligatory mention of the one annoying exception: Lovis' model, that opens and closes her mouth like a goldfish with minimal expression. For regular Ghibli fans, a few notes of comparison to what they mightbe use to (besides the aforementioned CGI)-
The backgrounds are as beautiful as ever.
If one of your favourite parts of other Ghibli works are the creatures (soot sprites etc.) there's plenty of that here so you may enjoy this.
This is aimed at a younger audience I think than a lot of other Ghibli so you should bare that in mind before starting. As an adult there's still stuff to get out of it in terms of sheer vibes and comedy but try not to fall into the trap of taking it too seriously. Alternatively, start a drinking game where you drink every time there's a scene when Ronja could have broken her neck. You will get very drunk.
So in summary, by no means perfect but a pretty nice watch.
