Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Watched it a year after it being aired and I've been fully disappointed after all the hype this anime had. I would have dropped it mid series but watching it with a friend made it better because we could comment how ludicrous many things were. Story: 3/10 First of all, this anime is heavily sexist. Full of unnecesary rape scenes, and shot after shot of close up nude or tightly clothed female bodies. Pretty much all staring female characters are sexualized at least once. It feels really rushed, characters pop into the story without much explanation, and they do stuff or stuff happens to them without any apparentreason, just for the sake of moving forward the plot. Seriously, so many plot points are outright absurd just to solve problems characters have been put in.
Art: 5/10
You can feel a low budget in the art quite easily, I don't know how much they spent on animating this, but it just feels really sloppy. I'm also a fan for movies with undetailed stuff mixed with detail (in this case, undetailed characters with detailed environment). Character style and design was good, but the latter doesn't stand out against similar animes out there.
Sound: 6/10
I don't have much to say about sound. Some of the music was cool, the rest was forgettable. Sound effects didn't really stand out compared with other anime, so I can't give it more points.
Character: 2/10
The most disappointing part of the anime. Only the main character is kind of stable throughout all the story, the rest flop, or change drastically for no much reason. All progression is based on senseless plot twists with no explanation, expecting the spectator to feel outplayed by the plot, when what happens is just twisting things for the sake to fix holes in the plot or saving characters from getting derailed.
Enjoyment: 3/10
Some scenes are cool, but you just have to suspend your disbelief so much that it becomes a burden. If you watch it with someone you can have some kind of fun, but I guess watching it alone can be really boring.
