Review of Dorohedoro
DoroHeDoro was a complete surprise! From outstanding music in the opening and credits, to the way they handle each character, this show is an underrated hidden gem in the making! It's violent, funny, weird, and most of all, charming. I believe this show is really deserving of a second season! The show starts slow in the beginning, but for good reason, and another part of why DoroHeDoro is genius: worldbuilding. The first few episodes focus entirely on explaining to you how this universe works- What is the Hole? What happens in the Hole? Why did Caiman become a lizard head? And it does this inthe least heavy handed way possible with no narrator to tell you what's happening, but rather you seeing the world for yourself, firsthand. Each character, each setting, they all have a purpose which leads to an ending that elevates it to masterful while at the same time falling flat (hence the need for a 2ndseason).
On to characters, you will fall in love with every single one! From the "good guys" Caiman and Nikaido, to the "bad guys" Shin, Noi, En, Ebisu, and Fujita. The protagonists get just as much screen time as the antagonists that you wont know who the real protagonists are while watching, and that in itself deserves high praise. Not many shows take the liberty to show a complete detail of the antagonists motivations while showing you why the protagonist must do what he needs to do. For that, it takes its place as a masterpiece in character writing.
Where it sort of falls flat is the art, rather the animation. The artstyle is superb and unique, and the backgrounds of 2D animation are stunning... but the CG can be quite off putting at times. The fight scenes don't take too much time so as to focus more on worldbuilding and progressing the story, so that depends on the viewer if they prefer fights or story. It didn't bother me much, but I know the CG will bother most of you. Just know that it's going to be a fun ride, and the CG won't totally override your enjoyment of the series, because this is the most important part! DoroHeDoro is so damn fun! The jokes hit all the right notes and will really make you laugh, and the misadventures of all the main cast makes you love them even more, you won't know who to root for! Not only is it fun, but it can be very serious at a moment's notice, and the serious moments are just as good.
So to recap:
Amazing Music
Masterful Characters
Outstanding Worldbuilding
Cool Artstyle (iffy CG)
and Pure unadulterated fun!
Now, it'd be great if you watched it too, so we could get a second season :)
