Insector · review
Quick review here, Before I say anything else, let's just say the author of Insector deserves the praise for trying to make something different than the general. And I might change my opinion, as I'm only halfway through it. Insector is a really simple manhwa. Half insect, half human beings roam the earth and they eat, well, humans. They look like humans or at least the most of the time, but when they transform, they gain incredible powers, which they use to hunt down their prey. Every character (or at least most of them) has their own insect. Ant, ladybug, moth, butterfly, mantis etc. (but nospider or scorpion, because they are arachnids, which is a nice touch by the author. He knew what he was doing). New power system, very well done.
This seems like a success. A mysterius, horror story about man eating monsters, where fans of the bugs and fans of the thrill both can enjoy themselves. It's kinda similar to Tokio Ghoul in some extent. However, the bug parade soon turns into a power rangers show. Less gore and brutality, and more fancy suits and big fights. Both the horror and the instect lovers will be left dissappointed. The only humans who will remain in the story are the family and friends of the main character, and the focus will be on power scaling and big battles.
Speaking of which, shounen mangas/manhwas/animes heavily rely on their main character. They are the defining trait of a shounen after all. In Insectors case, our guy is decent. He is definietly the main character, but mainly because of the plot. There is nothing else to talk about, because beside his origin story, he is kinda stiff. It's not a bad thing at all, I just thought it would be important to tell you he is really passive. On it's own way, it's somewhat charming at the same time, but it makes the manhwa less memorable. He is painfully realistic in an absurd story.
Overwall: insector is worth reading, but not because if the insects or the horror and paranoia. Even I compared to things like Tokyo Ghoul at first, but don't let it fool you. The story will remain dark, but it will change a lot. This might be the main reason for mediocre it's rating. However, at the end of the day, I quite liked it.
