Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
[ This is a review both season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, it contains spoilers as well.] The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya is a comedy, high school, slice of life, Scifi anime adapted from the novel series of the same name by Naguru Tanigawa. It tells the story of a normal high schooler named Kyon who meets a girl that wishes that supernatural stuff existed named Haruhi Suzumiya, unbeknownst to her she does have supernatural godlike powers, Kyon then meets 3 people with paranormal powers, Koizumi a esper, Yuki an alien, and Asahina a time traveler, they must stop Haruhi from feeling bored or sufferthe devastating consequences. While this series is really popular and has a strong dedicated fanbase behind it, it has a lot of flaws, for me the anime is not that good, its mediocare at best. It has a lot of unfulfilling and boring moments, for example like what is the purpose of Kyon in Haruhi's life, it is said that he was chosen and it is implied that Haruhi likes him, but why necessarily, what about Haruhi's parents do they know about her powers, if they did what would their reaction and approach be, and why the hell does she have godlike powers in the first place, come on men I know it's anime but still give us at least a decent explanation, also if you guys didn't notice the show has too much fanservice sprinkled on it, when fanservice becomes too much it ruins the show. Now let me talk about the arcs, imma go with the most problematic one yet the endless 8 arc, now it was honestly really boring, the only good part of it was perharps the first 2 episodes, but if you're going to repeat the same thing for 8 episodes then it's seriously going to bore people out, apparently a lot of people dropped the anime at this point, well can you blame em, it was pretty unberable, well it did have a little bit of changes in each episode but its not really worth watching in the end, I get that the producers wanted to make the dissapearance of Haruhi Suzumiya a movie and they didn't have enough source material so they extended it to 8 episodes, but why not just make the anime shorter man ever thought of that, its obvious they just wanted to cast in its success. The first arc was decent, and it provides the only explanation for Haruhi's powers and what would happen if things didn't go her way, the island resort arc well I expected more out of it, it was really predictable, I knew it from the start that the murder was staged for Haruhi's entertainment, the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya arc where we got the girl rebelling against Yuki and tryna stir up trouble for Kyon, pretty great arc actually, then the messed up broadcast order episodes taking place after the movie was made, it had that cringey episode of them showing the movie, man I know it's a comedy episode but atleast make it funny it's just straight up cringe dawg. The last episodes of season 1 then featured some randomfiller episodes where nothing really happens. The final arc the movie making arc was a rollercoaster of a ride, it went from fucking boring, to interesting, to boring again. I heard that movie was pretty good but after watching the anime, my expectations are very low, oh and yeah I watched the chronological order, and not the jumbled broadcast order so that saved this anime's rating for me a little bit. For me Haruhi Suzumiya is a not good not bad mediocare at best comedy high school slice of life with supernatural elements into it type of anime, I did enjoy it at times, but my season 2 pretty much ruined my enjoyment of the series.
Pros:
-Pretty good OP and ED for both seasons
-Season 1 was pretty decent
-Season 1 was pretty fun and funny
Cons:
-Season 2 is bad
-Endless 8
-No explanation nor reason for important matters concerning the plot nor the characters
-Has a romance tag but doesn't have any romantic development whatsoever
-Too much fanservice
-Has a lot of execution and plot issues
-Has boring parts
Overall The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya is a decent at best High school comedy with supernatural elements anime, it does have major plot, show inconveniences and issues, looking at you the reason endless 8 exist, broadcast and chronological order, plus no explanation for better understanding of the plot whatsoever, also the show has no romantic development despite being a romance anime apparently. A lot of boring, cringe and infuriating moments, a little bit of decent arcs and comedy, but overall not really worth watching in general, I give The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a 6/10 for my overall anime rating, hopefully the movie is better.
