Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
neon genesis evangelion is a classic, iconic anime, and for very good reason. story: 10/10. the story is unique and compelling. it never failed to keep me interested from start to finish. there's some "mature" scenes but they're they're as part of the story, not for fanservice. art: 10/10. the animation is surprising high quality for the time, especially because gainax was apparently running out of money at the time. the art style is very beautiful as well. sound: 10/10. the version I watched, the english netflix dub, is pretty good. the voices are appropriate for the characters' ages and personalities. character: 10/10. all of them, like realpeople, have complex and multidimensional personalities. they all have flaws. they act the way they do for a reason. for example, asuka lashes out at others because she's a traumatized teenager, not for the sake of being a "cute tsundere" character, and the way she acts around kaji (if I remember correctly, she begs him to touch her) is because her mother ignored her, making her crave attention from him to fill that space, not just sexualizing her for no reason like a lot of anime is guilty of. shinji isn't your typical protagonist, he's not remarkably intelligent or attractive or skilled. he hates himself and thinks he's worthless. he's much more relatable than modern anime's blank slate, self insert protagonists will ever be.
enjoyment: 10/10. I'm very happy that I watched it.
overall: 10/10. it's a must-watch for all anime fans. if you haven't already seen it, you should watch it.
