Makaryuudo Demon Hunter · review
This anime is one of those short OVAs from the late 80s/early 90s that carries the classic atmosphere of its era—dark, gritty, and unapologetically packed with demons, horror, and supernatural action. This short OVA is good and nice for its time, but it definitely feels rushed. The story doesn’t really take its time to build tension or flesh out its characters. Instead, it often skips straight into action, with the protagonist singlehandedly slaying demons left and right. While this makes for flashy fights, it also makes the pacing feel uneven and prevents the narrative from reaching its full potential. That said, the atmosphere is strong. TheOVA manages to pack horror, supernatural elements, and demonic battles into a compact runtime. The animation is what you’d expect from its era—not groundbreaking, but gritty enough to complement the horror themes. The soundtrack and overall tone also contribute to its dark charm.
If you’re into short, retro horror-action OVAs and don’t mind a story that feels a bit rushed, Makai Yuudo: Demon Hunter is worth checking out. It’s a nice piece of anime history that shows how supernatural horror was imagined at the time, even if it leaves you wishing for a more fleshed-out series.
