The World God Only Knows is a light comedy/romance about an otaku who plays galge games nonstop. Keima is your average protagonist. He's a young kid that plays galge games compulsively and rejects the real world in favor of playing games all day. He meets a demon girl named Elsie who's a bit of a dunce. Together they run around capturing escaped souls from hell by seducing the women that the souls take over. It can essentially be boiled down to this: an otaku that loves galge games has to use his knowledge of galge tropes to seduce girls in real life. It's a cheesy (if notslightly charming) concept, but I don't think the anime executes it that well.

As far as plot goes, there isn't much of one. Keima seduces a new girl every 2-3 episodes, and each arc is dedicated to how he figures out how to seduce the girl. After seducing his target girl, the girl loses all memory (how convenient) and the cycle begins again. It's straightforward and not especially unique or interesting.

Keima's character is kind of frustrating. He's supposed to be a turbo-neet that spends all his time playing galges. While his classmates do consider him a nerd, he still tends to have an unnatural ability to smooth talk his way through anything and all the girls he has to pursue ultimately fall for him fairly fast. It's a weird contradiction - is he supposed to be an awkward nerd or some kind of super womanizer? Either way, his character is hardly believable. He's kind of a romantic Gary Stu, basically incapable of failing when it comes to seducing women.

Elsie is a fairly bland and forgettable companion. She's ditzy and impulsive and Keima frequently belittles her. She's oftentimes just an emotional punching bag for him and even though there are hints that she loves him, it's hardly something that gets any focus.

The other sidecharacters that Keima seduces are basically just galge tropes watered down into a simple character with a problem that Keima helps them solve. It's a harem except Keima never interacts with any of his harem after he seduces them. Which means these side characters are basically disposable, and forgotten after their episode arc ends.

A lot of episodes feel like they have way too much filler. The arc with the idol girl wastes a lot of time with her performing songs. I guess if you're into listening to a generic anime song that's fine, but I immediately tuned out of it.

Another complaint I have is that this show ended up being way too formulaic. It's the same predictable loop: Elsie locates a new girl for Keima to seduce, Keima spends time figuring out how to seduce her, then Keima seduces her and Elsie locks up the evil spirit and they move on to the next target. Nothing special or noteworthy ever seems to happen and there doesn't seem to be much character development to make up for this even.

The first 2 seasons are very formulaic but the final season does bring back some of the side-plot characters and gives them a bit of depth. It's also got one of the crappiest finales. Everything plot related gets rushed out in the final 2-3 episodes. The pacing feels awful and major chunks of the story are quickly resolved and ignored.

The art, music and voice acting are fine. Nothing insanely epic but nothing terrible. The writing suffers from being very predictable and the writers didn't make any effort to really develop the characters or introduce an interesting plot. The comedy has some funny moments, but that isn't enough to make up for the other failures.

Ultimately, this is a romantic comedy with a handful of funny moments and a bunch of generic, trope-heavy romance moments. If you're okay with seeing the same formula repeated over and over with repetitive arcs that last 2-3 episodes tops then I guess you'll get some enjoyment out of this. The plot and character progression is wonky at best and in general I found this anime fairly forgettable and ultimately overhyped for what it is.
