Review of Ya Boy Kongming!
SHORT REVIEW: I think what's seriously lacking in this show is focus. It doesn't know what type of show it wants to be and ended up being just a forgettable mish-mash of different genres. It's not funny enough to be a comedy. Not realistic enough to be a slice-of-life. Not dramatic enough to be a drama. And I know that it can be its own thing, but overall, the sum of its parts just falls flat in every aspect. The writing is predictable. The characters are one note. The animation is watered down soup. And the music is...not my personal taste. But if it's yours thenI totally respect that.
Furthermore, what is it with Koumei? He is supposed to be the MC. His name is literally in the title yet he doesn't have any depth to him nor does he have any arc in his own freaking show. He is just this deux ex-machina Godlike character who fixes everyone's problems. I expected him to have a lot of fish-out-of-water hijinks yet they never happened. Like, "Here is a phone: a complicated electrical device you've never seen before and probably can't even fathom." And then the next scene he's like, "Yeah I've already mastered it." Like what? Give me depth. Give me vulnerability. Koumei is like the male version of a Mary Sue, which, much like a Mary Sue, makes him an incredibly boring character.
This show is overhyped because of its first few episodes. And I have to admit it had a lot of promise. But it was a nosedive straight to the bottom of the ocean of mediocrity after episode 3. Sadly.
