Review of Lazarus

Lazarus is one of those anime that had a lot of buzz even before it hit the screens. With big names attached and MAPPA leading the animation production, expectations were sky-high. For me personally, this anime turned out to be a mixed bag. Some moments truly impressed me, while others left me underwhelmed. Let’s start with the positives. The beginning of Lazarus was genuinely gripping. The premise was strong, and the characters had enough mystery to make you want to keep watching. The first few episodes gave me a lot of hope that this was going to be a tight, well-paced sci-fi action series with depth. Unfortunately, things started to change as the series entered its middle episodes. The pacing slowed down significantly, and the story lost some of its spark. Certain episodes felt dragged out, and at times I felt like the show was stretching a simple plot just to fill screen time. The excitement and thrill from the early episodes were missing, and it became difficult to stay fully engaged. While not entirely boring, the mid-section certainly lacked the punch that the beginning had promised.

However, I’m glad to say the anime picks up again toward the end. The last few episodes brought back the intensity, and I found myself once again excited to see what would happen next. The buildup to the final conflict and the way everything starts coming together reignited my interest.

That said, the biggest flaw of Lazarus lies in its storytelling. The plot had potential but it often felt stretched and unfocused. There were moments where I felt the anime was trying too hard to be complex, adding layers and subplots that didn’t always feel necessary or well-developed. Instead of adding depth, some of these elements made the story feel cluttered and uneven.

Another point worth mentioning is the hype that surrounded this anime before its release. With the involvement of top-tier creators and the reputation of MAPPA, there was a strong belief that Lazarus would be a groundbreaking series. Sadly, it didn’t quite live up to those expectations. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad anime. It’s definitely watchable and has its strong moments, but it falls short of being truly memorable or genre-defining.

In conclusion, Lazarus is an anime that shines in parts but struggles to maintain consistency. It starts strong, stumbles through the middle, and recovers toward the end. The animation and action are top-notch, but the story could’ve been tighter and more focused. If you go in with moderate expectations, there’s enough here to enjoy, but if you expected a masterpiece, you might come away disappointed.
