This is how a period shounen piece should be done. In terms of the story itself, this anime has two major strengths: (1) character development and (2) moral obscurity. Both Dororo and Hyakkimaru are intensely likable characters, and their relationship is appealing because they balance one another out so well. {SPOILER AHEAD} And the way the aspects of gender and identity were handled with Dororo was appropriate for the character and tactful--the fact that gender DIDN'T play a role in the relationship dynamic between Dororo and Hyakkimaru was refreshing and lovely. Hyakkimaru is also just such a likable character, especially given he doesn't speak forhalf the show? His transition into humanity is slow, gentle, and achingly real. He is a character you don't forget. Tahomaru is also a deeply engaging character. And secondly, the moral landscape of the show is phenomenal. Despite the fact that the Daigo family has had dealings with demons and sacrificed their own son, the show also highlights the disasters, pain, and loss felt by people throughout the countryside. The dual vision of the sacrifice, responsibility, and potential callousness of the Samurai and the helplessness, hunger, grief of their people is striking. You cannot help but have moments in which you think that perhaps Hyakkimaru's sacrifice is worth it. But it isn't. Is it?

I cannot suggest watching this show enough; it is a space to learn more about yourself, your own humanity, and the relationships you create. It is a meditation on family, the one you're given, and the one you choose. Loyalty, kindness, the power of choice, the failure of aggression, the failures of unnecessary sacrifice or pain.

Please enjoy this anime. It is definitely worth the watch.
